Synopsis: Dr. Zaina Al-Mohtaseb will discuss how to diagnose and manage corneal ulcers (bacterial, fungal, parasitic). Also discussed will be corneal transplantation such as DMEK and their post-operative management. She will also touch on new multifocal IOLs on the market and secondary IOL techniques.

Sugar Land Regional Meeting

John J. Alappatt, MD will present “Vitroretinal Surgery”


Synopsis: This lecture will highlight various surgical cases regarding vitreoretinal surgery. Topics will include small gauge vitrectomy techniques and new illumination options which allow bimanual membrane dissection. Specific cases will be reviewed which include pneumatic displacement of massive submacular hemorrhage, retrieval of subluxed intraocular lens with suturing of a posterior chamber intraocular lens, drainage of suprachoroidal hemorrhage, macular hole and pucker, and repair of retinal detachment.

Sapa T. Pham, MD will present “Noninfectious Uveitis”


Synopsis: Noninfectious uveitis is a rare disease but is associated with a high incidence of vision loss. Noninfectious uveitis is inflammation in the eye that is associated with autoimmune disease. After this presentation, attendees should be able to identify the common causes of noninfectious uveitis, recognize key clinical findings. And discuss treatment modalities.

Michael K. Lam, MD will present “Ocular Hypertension in Ghana, West Africa”


Synopsis: This lecture will describe the challenges of treating glaucoma in rural Ghana. The speaker will describe a clinical study investigating the incidence of ocular hypertension and highlight the economic and cultural challenges of treating glaucoma in Ghana. Conclusions: Treating ocular hypertension even when a formal diagnosis cannot be established may reduce the incidence of blindness due to glaucoma based on the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study.
